Surrey sports stars enjoy success at Surrey Sports Awards


surrey sports awards 2013Surrey’s Olympians and Paralympians joined the local sporting community to help them celebrate their achievements and award wins at the seventh annual Surrey Sports Awards, held on Thursday December 5 at Kempton Park.

The event, now in its seventh year, welcomed BBC Surrey and a host of special guests including London 2012 kayaking Olympic bronze medallist, Liam Heath and Paralympic wheelchair basketball star Helen Turner.

 

 

The full list of winners is:Outstanding Service to Sport shortlist

  • Basingstoke Canal Canoe Club, based in Surrey Heath, has won the LXPlus Fitness Award
  • Edward Rutherford of the Elmbridge Canoe Club has won the Freedom Leisure Sports Personality of the Year Award
  • Epsom-based water polo star Matthew Helps has been awarded the Surrey Sports Park Young Sports Personality of the Year Award
  • The senior team at Farnham Swimming Club has won the Barratt Homes Sports Team of the Year Award
  • Chris Lee, of Farnham Swimming Club, has won the Global Markets Consultants Volunteer of the Year AwardSurrey Sports Personality of the Year 2013
  • Alex Sarama of Goldhawks Basketball Club has been awarded the Surrey County Playing Fields Association Young Volunteer of the Year Award
  • Guildford Flames star, Milos Melicherik, has been named the Achieve Lifestyle Sports Professional of the Year
  • The Nuffield Health Club of the Year Award has gone to Staines Boat Club
  • Manorcroft United U9 have become winners of the Abellio Young Sports Team of the Year
  • Linda Beere of Chertsey Thames Valley Hockey Club who has won the BBC Surrey Outstanding Service to Sport Award
  • Alan Woolford, of Queen Mary Sailing Club – Sailability has won the 3wise Disability Sport Award
  • Daniel Simper of Ashford Ladies Cricket Club has been awarded the Active Surrey Coach of the Year Award

Vision ChoirVision Choir provided the evening’s entertainment: Formed in early 2013 by a group of people from the thousands who took part in the four London 2012 Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the group called themselves ‘Vision’ and collaborated on various motivational songs and appeared at a number of concerts throughout the year.

 

 

 

 


Surrey Hills TVIn attendance at the awards were Holly Jennings and Ben Rose of Surrey Hills fame which is the latest eagerly awaited TV show, following in the footsteps of Made in Chelsea. The show aims to lift the lid on Surrey life and Holly and Ben attended the awards to show their support the Surrey’s vibrant sporting community “we are really delighted to have been invited tonight, it’s been great to see so many people involved, we know the organisers Active Surrey and were keen to support their efforts in promoting sport and recognising local achievements,” said Holly.
